Ludwig von Mises : Scholar, Creator, Hero
Published in Paperback by Ludwig Von Mises Inst ()
Author: Murray N. Rothbard
Average review score:

Concise
Ludwig von Mises did more than anyone in the twentieth century to advance the cause of individual freedom. His work as an economist and social thinker will certainly stand the test of time. One of his students was the late Murray Rothbard, who attended Mises' seminar in 1949. Rothbard provides a brief, but very exciting look at Mises' life and work in this small book. The most interesting part of this work is von Mises' role in the Austrian government after World War I. This book is worth reading, but as an exposition of von Mises' life and work, Israel Kirzner's recently published study is more comprehensive. Nonetheless, Rothbard's wit and tenacity shines through as usual.

A fitting tribute from a great student
Rothbard honors his great teacher Mises in under 80 pages - but never did the biography read as if it was too short. Here is a great source for an account of Mises's life and also his ideas from someone who championed and expanded them. Overall, a delightful read.

Marxian Economics: The New Palgrave (New Palgrave Series)
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (April, 1990)
Authors: John Eatwell, Murray Milgate, and Peter Newman
Average review score:

IT IS A NICE HAND-BOOK TO LEARN MARXIAN CONCEPTS
IT IS A GOOD BOOK FOR WHO WOULD LIKE TO LEARN SOME BASIC MARXIAN CONCEPTS. READERS WOULD FEEL AFTER IT HAS BEEN FINISHED THAT THEY LEARNT MANY UNKONOWN MARXIAN TERMS AND IMPROVED THEMSELVES.

get beyond the basics
The Book will definitely give you the basics of Karl Marx and Marxism and get you beyond them. The book consists of essays by modern authors on the various concepts of Marx: surplus value, labour power, mode of production, dialectics, labour theory of value, etc.

Marxian Economics is both politics, sociology, economics, history and philosophy, all these discussed in this book. The essays are very easy to follow and understand.

You will crave for more after reading this book.

Med Ship
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Baen Books (August, 2002)
Author: Murray Leinster
Average review score:

Reprinted Stories
Med Ship is a collection of stories written by Murray Leinster between 1957 and 1966. They are the continuing adventures of Calhoun, a physician with the Interstellar Medical Service. He travels the galaxy in his own small spaceship with his pet and companion, Murgatroyd, visiting planets to try to solve public health issues. Each story is self-contained, and tells of Calhoun's adventures on a new planet that has a health crisis. Murgatroyd is utterly charming, and steals every scene he appears in. I was a little bit disappointed by the stories, because they were not what I was expecting. I thought that they would be stories of Calhoun trying to find solutions to health problems, but more often they are stories of Calhoun trying to defeat ruthless, greedy people who are using the health crises for their own advantage. I was also a bit put off by the tendency for every epidemic to be called "the plague." Overall, though, they are an enjoyable collection of stories about trying to stamp out ignorance and restore good health and prosperity to the peoples of the galaxy.

MED SHIP
I loved Med Ship I passed it on rather than turn it in to the used book store. Each story is complete within itself but complemented the other stories.

P.S. It is a book of short stories and novellettes.

Murray Walker: Unless I'm Very Much Mistaken

Author: Murray Walker

The Muzza!
An amazing book about an amazing chap! Sadly, being an American fan, I never had the privilege of hearing Muzza commentate. I've never seen one race he called, but I knew that he had to be something special judging by the Brit's rant about him. I grew to respect him over the years by reading all of my British F1 magazine subscriptions and when I heard this was coming out, I searched frantically to find it. I knew it was released but could not find it in the states. My wife ordered it from Amazon.co.UK in September 2002 for my birthday and I couldn't have been happier. What a great book about a great man. It's not chocked full of the intricate F1 details that you might suspect. Rather, a delightful tale of a man's life and how blessed he has been. Murray is certainly humble about his life and yet keenly aware of his brand equity and respect in the industry. This is not a tell all book about F1 but it is a story about a man who's life orbited a sport so dear to many people's heart's. If you are looking for a tell-all about Jos the Boss or a blow-by-blow about the constantly growing accomplishments of the "great" Senna, this is not that type of book. It takes you from childhood through the war and on to his greatest passion....that's right...motorcycles! I know, thought it would have been F1 didn't you? Well, that how charming this book is. You would never know Muzza was having an affair with F1, so dedicated was his work.

I highly recommend this book to any one wanting to learn how to live a life of success free from ego and pretense. To anyone who loves the sport of motor racing and the glory of the sport as it evolved. To anyone who wants to hear from the man who called every lap of motor racings evolution over all these years.

Murray writes like he talks....
...and that's a good thing! This book is for all of us who miss his charismatic, knowledgable and breathless commentary of all things motorsport, but particularly Formula One. A national institution in Britain, Murray Walker was the voice of Formula One first on the BBC and later on ITV, and the sale of television feed globally made him known throughout the world. When he retired at the US Grand Prix at Indianapolis in 2001 he left millions of fans sad to see him go. His autobiography comes as a concentrated dose of Murray that will make you laugh out loud many times but will also let you pause at marvel at a life so full of wonderul experiences. The real meat on F1 starts about halfway through the book, but racing fanatics: don't spring forward and miss the fantastic account of Murray's childhood, his introduction to motorsports and broadcasting by his motorcycling enthusiast father and his account of his WWII experience. The book is a thoroughly entertaining read and an absolute must for every motorsport fan.

Nice Try: A Murray Whelan Mystery
Published in Hardcover by Arcade Publishing (March, 2000)
Author: Shane Maloney
Average review score:

So Near Yet So Far Away
A word of warning to non-Australian readers, although written in English, the Australian vernacular in this book is used often and with wild abandon. Before reading the book, it would be wise to brush up on your Aussie slang, lest you get left behind. A quick test is provided at the end of this review to see if you're up to it.

In case you want to brave it without fortifying yourself with the lingo, err...language, here's a rundown as to what the book's about. Fair dinkum!

It's 1990 and the city of Melbourne is making a bid for the 1996 Olympic Games, and things are looking very promising. As far as the Bid Committee is concerned, they're a shoo-in, with only one possible cloud on the horizon. They want to ensure that the aboriginal people are on board when the IOC delegates hit town. So Murray Whelan is enlisted to keep things quiet on the aboriginal front. A simple job as far as he's concerned, it should be money for jam and then back to his job as advisor to the Minister for Water Supply.

And so it was until a young aboriginal athlete is bashed to death, and pretty soon, the whole bid starts to become jeopardised. As fast as Murray tries to fix the problems, the more they seem to crop up with the problems becoming more outlandish and, at times, amusing.

As we all know, the Melbourne bid for the 1996 Olympic Games failed and this is a humorous suggestion as to a contributing factor to it's failure.

Oh yes, and here's my test to see how hard or easy it will be to understand the language: "Take a squiz at this book, she's a real corker, fair dinkum. You'd be a real drongo to miss it and probably about as popular as a blowie at a barbie .So garn, give it a burl."

He knew it all along
Today - Memorial Day 2000 - the New York Times headlined a story about a massive protest by the Aborigines in Sidney. They feel left out of the cultural doings at the upcoming Summer Olympics. In his book, Mr.Maloney's protagonist Murray Wheelan tries to nail down Melbourne's bid for the 1996 Summer Olympics. Guess what the problem is? The aborigines feel neglected and protest. This being fiction, things get quite involved, of course, with murder, mayhem and a family confusion right out of Gilbert and Sullivan. We have a passel of Aussie crackpots, and the author's humor makes you laugh out loud. Ignore the mystery part - just enjoy the incredible humor.

Penguin Dictionary of Art and Artists

Author: Peter and Murray, Linda Murray
Average review score:

Great resource
As an art education major this book came in handy. It is a great reference for anyone who wants to learn more about an artist as a person and as an artist. It gives short bios on many different artists from different periods through art history. It was well worth the money.

Essential Reference for the Art History Student
Excellent reference for art history research, art criticism, or for deciphering someone else's writing about art.

Examples of entries: academy, encaustic wax, Lembruck, Suprematism. So there are techniques, movements, institutions, and individual artists... all explained concisely but with essential dates and details.

Saves lots of time when you need to refer to some movement or influencing artist but don't want to get caught up in an enormous amount of data.

Western art only. (You won't find Buddha, Sumi-e, etc).

Pinocchio: The Tale of a Puppet
Published in Paperback by Signet (August, 1996)
Authors: Carlo Collodi, M. A. Murray, and Charles Folkard
Average review score:

This is not your father's Pinocchio.
I grew up with a sanatized Pinocchio.

Walt Disney had presented a charming little boy, who had a little cricket friend, who learned his lesson and lived happily ever after.

A bit shocking to learn that Pinocchio is a brat.

The story itself is not at all what I expected, having been told for years that "Pinocchio" was a pleasant little tale. There is a dark side to the little wooden puppet -- a selfishness that is not usually portrayed in cartoons.

There is a lesson to be learned here; however, the lesson did not come as I expected it to. The book was definitely worth reading; just be prepared for a Pinocchio of a different color.

Pinocchio was written by a man who knew children
Carlo Collodi remembered his childhood and realized that children must learn responsibility to truly become people. This is the ultimate lesson the story of Pinocchio teaches-while entertaining at the same time.

Getting Gepetto out of the whale was only the first step in Pinocchio's tranformation. He became a hard worker, working for a farmer whose donkey was ill.(This donkey had been a friend of Pinocchio's,who'd conned him into going to that place where boys became donkeys.)Pinocchio rebuffed the Fox and the Cat,apologized to the Talking Cricket and really helped support Gepetto- and later gave the money he'd been saving to a snail who said that the Fairy with Blue Hair needed money. This proved how changed Pinocchio was because this time selfish intentions were swept away by a wish to help others-instead of the other way around.Pinocchio became a real boy not long afterwards.

Today's society pampers children much much more than Collodi's society did in the mid-19th century.Children are supposed to be nice little boys and girls who only have fun and play with all kinds of toys(and Madison Avenue wants to keep them that way as long as possible). Thus, the Pinocchio story was reconstructed by adapters- including that Walton Dizzy fellow-to fit today's society. But children haven't really changed.Perhaps there is more of a need than ever for them to realize that everything cannot be handed to them on a silver platter. The real Pinocchio should become more well-known again.

To the reader in Wisconsin-this is not our fathers' Pinocchio, alright. This is our great-great-grandfathers' Pinocchio.
